Game management

Somogy County has very good stock of game and variable natural conditions. It has hills in Out-Somogy in south shore of the Lake Balaton and Zselic hills south to Kaposvár as well as flat area near to the River Dráva. There are forests in 27 % of its area and therefore it is one of the regions having high density of forests. There are many agricultural plots among the forests of some hundred ha area. It gives very good living conditions to the big game. SEFAG Ltd carries out game management in seven hunting areas. It means altogether approximately 130,000 ha the biggest hunting area in Hungary. The biggest contiguous area is 48,000 ha in Lábod while the smallest one is 3,200 ha in Barcs. All varieties of big game living in Hungary can be found in hunting area of SEFAG Ltd including red deer, fallow-deer, wild-boar, roe deer and moufflons. Quality of red deer is excellent therefore six of hunting areas managed by our company have got stressed status to save the gene stock. The best trophies hunted in our areas are as follows: red deer shut in Lábod in 2001 had a trophy of 16.83 kg with 265.67 scores given by international judgement. It is seventh in the World rank.

The next trophy - eighth in the World rank - is a little smaller - 14.05 kg with 263.88 scores - and was shut in Kaposvár-Vörösalma in 2002. The biggest fallow-deer, which was shut so far in 2002 in Segesd-Csöprönd had a trophy of 5.22 kg with 211.37 scores. The biggest moufflon was shut in Szántód in November 2006 and won gold medal with his 91 cm long trophy. Regarding roe deer and wild-boar, we have gold-medalled trophy very rarely; trophy above 500 g and 22 cm cannot frequently be shot.

Game that can be hunted yearly is 2.000 red deer of which approximately 300 are stag; 1.100 fallow-deer of which approximately 250 are stag; 700 roe deer of which approximately 250 are roebuck; and 100 moufflons of which 30 are ram. Wild boar is hunted in the largest number, 3.500 yearly. Altogether 7.000 animals can be hunted yearly. Small game hunt it\'s possible too, yearly 4.000 semi wild duck and 3.000 pheasant and several partridge can be shoot. Our guests can get accommodation in twelve hunting lodges and there are more and more guests who come back from year to year.
