In accordance with the approved forest management plans that are made annually and supervised by State Forestry Service gross amount of 400,000-420,000 m3 timber can be cut in forests being under management of Somogyi Forestry and Wood Industrial Ltd. It is approximately 80-85 % of the possibilities specified in the annual managing plan. Regarding the volume of fell as well as varieties of the timber being cut out, our company is among the state-owned forest management companies in Hungary that produce timber in the largest volume.
Forest using activity to be carried out in the variable forests in Somogy County needs various technological procedures. Careful work and much experience is required when trees are cut in young and middle-aged forests for growing purpose; when all trees are cut in order to promote the natural renewal of the forest and we plant new trees; as well as in case of clearing before artificial renewal of the forest. Wood cutting is a hard manual work and needs much knowledge therefore we have to keep a very strict technological discipline. It is provided by making precise felling plans and our entrepreneurs (contractors) shall work in accordance with these plans. By this, approximately 1500 people living in small villages in this district can be employed in wood cutting and other procedures in use of timber. Oak timber being cut out in forests of Somogy County has very good structure and is very good raw material of sawing industry. It is famous in Hungary and over the borders, too. In addition to the great varieties of the trees occurring here, silver linden and alder ("pine of Somogy County") trees shall be emphasized that can be found and cut in incomparably large area in Somogy region.
Result of the use of the timber is to produce the timber material that is required to meet the customers' demands continuously. The timber of the forest is utilised and by this we provide the conditions for renewing the forests, too. Material transport, delivery of the timber products to the customers are carried out by contractors in up-to-date lorries. Length of the weather-proof roads is 2.0 running metre/ha - less than the national average - but the unpaved roads are maintained properly and stock in intermediate loading facilities provide the conditions for the continuous transport.
